What Pokokpedia is

Pokokpedia explains how card and table games are actually played. Every page starts with the rules (what beats what, who acts first, how a round ends) and only then moves on to strategy. The test we apply to our own work is simple: if you read a page and still could not sit down and play the game, the page has failed, no matter how long it is.

The site is free to read. There is no membership, no sign-up and nothing to buy. It works the way a dictionary works: you arrive with a question, you find the answer, you leave.

What we cover

• Poker: Texas hold'em and the other common variants, hand rankings, betting rounds, position, and the vocabulary you will hear at a table.
• Rules: the exact procedure of each game, including the fiddly parts that most guides skip, such as baccarat's third-card rule or what happens when two players hold the same hand.
• Table games: blackjack, baccarat, roulette, and the card games people in Malaysia actually grow up playing, where house rules vary from family to family.
• Strategy: what genuinely improves your decisions, and, just as importantly, which popular systems do nothing at all.
• Tournaments: how formats, blind structures and payouts work, so a tournament lobby stops looking like a wall of numbers.

Who it is for

Beginners first. Most people meet these games sideways: a cousin deals a hand of Big Two at a family gathering, a friend explains blackjack badly, a film makes poker look like a game of nerve rather than a game of arithmetic. Pokokpedia is written for the reader who has seen a game played and wants to understand it properly.

Experienced players are welcome too, and there is material here for them, but nothing on this site is written to make a beginner feel excluded. When a technical term is unavoidable, it is defined in the same sentence it first appears in.

Three languages, one standard

Pokokpedia publishes in English at the root of the site, in Bahasa Melayu under /ms/, and in Simplified Chinese under /zh/. Use the language switch in the header or at the foot of any page to move between them.

None of the three is a translation of the others. Each version is written in its own language by someone writing for that reader, because the way a rule is explained in Malay is not the way it is explained in English, and card-game vocabulary in Malaysian Chinese has its own settled terms. What the three versions share is the subject and the standard of accuracy, not the sentences.

Where the name comes from

Pokok is Malay for tree, and it sits one sound away from poker. It also happens to echo a real term from the game: a game tree is the branching map of every decision a hand could take, and working through one is close to what studying a spot actually feels like.

That is all the name is. The site is organised the boring way, by game and then by topic, and you will never have to click a "branch" to find the blackjack page.

The standard we hold ourselves to

Game rules are facts, and readers check them. A wrong hand ranking or a wrong drawing rule would undo the entire point of the site, so we work to a short set of rules of our own:

• Accuracy before completeness. If we are not certain of something, we leave it out. An honest gap is better than a confident error.
• Name the variant. House edge and correct play both depend on the exact rules in force: whether the dealer hits soft 17, how many decks are in the shoe, whether blackjack pays 3:2 or 6:5. We say which rules a number belongs to instead of quoting a bare figure.
• No invented numbers. No fabricated test results, no made-up percentages, no bonus figures or promotion codes.
• No promises. No system beats the house edge. Where a popular method claims otherwise, we explain plainly why it does not work.
• Operator links are labelled, and they are not recommendations. Some pages carry a list of casino brands. Those are affiliate links (we are paid a commission if you open an account through one), and the order is set by our affiliate team as a commercial arrangement, not by any editorial judgement. Offer figures appear only once the affiliate team has confirmed them. The rules, strategy, glossary, payments and game pages carry no such links at all.
• No credentials we cannot evidence. Pages are bylined, but a byline never carries a qualification, an award, an accreditation or a career history.

What Pokokpedia is not

Pokokpedia is an information site. It does not operate, host, arrange or process gambling of any kind. There is no way to place a bet here, no accounts, no deposits and no payment processing. We do not take money from readers and we do not handle anyone's play. Where we link to a casino brand, that is an affiliate link and nothing more. The account, the money and the game are entirely between you and that operator.

We also do not tell anyone to gamble. Explaining how a game works is not the same as suggesting you should play it, and several of our pages exist mainly to show why a particular bet or system is a bad idea.

Gambling law in Malaysia is restrictive. The Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and the Betting Act 1953 govern gaming and betting, online gambling is not a permitted activity for the general public, and gambling is additionally prohibited for Muslims under Sharia law. We state that as fact, we do not encourage anyone to work around it, and readers are responsible for the law that applies to them. Everything here is written for readers aged 18 and over.
