Privacy Policy

Everything below is explained in full further down, but if you read only this section you will have the substance of it:

You can read every page on this site without giving us anything.
There are no user accounts, no logins, no newsletters and no contact forms.
We take no payments and store no card or banking details.
Our hosting provider keeps standard technical logs, as every web host does.
We may use privacy-respecting analytics to count visits and see which pages are useful.
We do not sell, rent or trade personal data. To anyone. Ever.
Our pages load web fonts from Google, which means your browser contacts a Google server. That is explained in full below.

What we collect

Information you give us

None, unless you choose to email us. If you write to us about a correction or a question, we will have your email address and whatever you put in the message, and we will use it to reply to you and nothing else.

Information collected automatically

Like every website, Pokokpedia is delivered by a hosting provider that records technical information about each request. That normally includes:

your IP address;
the date and time of the request;
the page or file requested, and whether it was served successfully;
your browser type and version, and your operating system;
the page that referred you, if any.

These logs exist to keep the site running, to diagnose faults and to detect abuse such as automated scraping or attacks. We do not use them to build a profile of you and we do not try to identify individual readers from them.

Analytics

We may use a website analytics tool to understand which pages are read, roughly where readers are, and how people arrive. This is aggregate information about traffic, not a record of you personally, and we use it only to decide what to write next and what to fix.

Analytics provider currently in use: none. Whether it sets cookies or stores identifiers: not applicable, the site runs no analytics.

What we never collect

No payment details, no identity documents, no gambling activity, no account balances, no health data and nothing about your finances. Pokokpedia has no mechanism to receive any of it and no reason to want it.

Cookies and similar technologies

Pokokpedia sets no advertising cookies and runs no third-party advertising or tracking network. There is no ad tech on this site.

Cookies that may be set: none set by this site; our host may set a security cookie such as __cf_bm to tell human visitors from bots.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. Because the site has no logins or saved preferences, blocking cookies will not stop any part of Pokokpedia from working.

Web fonts

Our pages load typefaces from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com). This means your browser makes a request directly to Google's servers when a page loads, and Google may log technical details of that request, including your IP address, under its own privacy policy rather than ours. We mention it because it is the one third party your browser genuinely contacts while reading this site, and most privacy policies quietly leave it out.

Why we process this information

To deliver the site: a web server cannot send you a page without knowing where to send it.
To keep it working and secure: diagnosing errors, spotting abuse, protecting the site from attack.
To improve what we publish: aggregate analytics tell us which explanations people actually read.
To answer you: if you email us, we use your message to reply.

We do not use any of it for advertising, profiling or automated decisions about you.

Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010

Pokokpedia is published for readers in Malaysia, and we apply the principles of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA), as amended, to the limited personal data we handle: collecting no more than is needed, using it only for the purposes described here, keeping it no longer than necessary, and protecting it while we hold it.

Where the PDPA gives you rights over personal data we hold about you, you may ask us to:

confirm what personal data we hold about you and give you access to it;
correct anything inaccurate, incomplete or out of date;
withdraw any consent you have given, at any time;
limit or stop processing that is causing you damage or distress;
delete data we no longer have a reason to keep.

In practice, for most readers the answer to the first question is that we hold nothing beyond the server logs described above, which are not linked to a name. To make a request, write to privacy@pokokpedia.com. We will need enough information to find the data before we can act on it, and we will reply within the period the PDPA allows.

We do not sell, rent, trade or otherwise disclose personal data for anyone else's commercial purposes. The only parties who handle anything are the service providers that make the site work:

Our hosting and content-delivery provider: serves the pages and holds the technical logs described above. Provider: Cloudflare Pages.
Our analytics provider, if one is in use: see the analytics section above.
Google Fonts: receives a request from your browser when a page loads, as described above.
Our email provider, if you write to us.

Some of these providers operate servers outside Malaysia, which is normal for internet infrastructure and means limited technical data may be processed abroad. We would also disclose information if we were legally required to by a court or a competent authority — and only then.

How long anything is kept

Server logs are kept for as long as our hosting provider's standard retention period, which is typically a short window measured in weeks, and then deleted or overwritten. Aggregate analytics may be kept longer, because once information is aggregated it no longer identifies anyone. Emails you send us are kept while the matter is open and for a reasonable period afterwards, then deleted.

Readers under 18

Pokokpedia is written for adults aged 18 and over and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, write to privacy@pokokpedia.com and we will delete it.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS, so the connection between your browser and our server is encrypted. Because we hold no accounts, no passwords and no payment data, there is very little here that would be worth stealing.

That said, no website or transmission over the internet is perfectly secure, and we will not claim otherwise. We take reasonable technical and organisational measures appropriate to the very limited data we handle.

Your choices

Cookies. Block or delete them in your browser. Nothing on this site will break.
Analytics. Browser settings, tracker blockers and private-browsing modes all prevent analytics from recording your visit, and we do not attempt to work around them.
Fonts. Extensions that block third-party requests will stop the Google Fonts request. The site will fall back to your system typefaces and remain perfectly readable.
Do Not Track. We run no cross-site tracking, so there is nothing here for a Do Not Track signal to switch off.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect or who handles it, we will update this page and move its effective date. Material changes will be described on the page rather than slipped in, because a privacy policy that changes silently is not a policy.
